BRIEF: Deputies thwart suicide attempt at jail

The Record-Eagle - 12/27/2017

Dec. 27--TRAVERSE CITY -- Police said a local inmate twice tried to kill herself in one evening at Grand Traverse County's jail before she was eventually placed on suicide watch.

Traverse City police Lt. Steve Drzwiecki said a Traverse City woman, 32, on Tuesday evening drank a bottle of a non-toxic cleaning solution. It's not clear how she obtained the bottle but the woman told deputies another inmate had instructed her to drink it, Drzwiecki said.

The woman later told authorities she didn't feel suicidal and she was returned to her cell following an evaluation by Community Mental Health professionals, Drzwiecki said. He said the same woman was found unconscious with her jail-issued T-shirt wrapped around her neck a few hours later.

Corrections officers were able to unhook and revive the woman after they discovered her laying face down underneath the bed in her jail cell, Drzwiecki said. He said she was taken to Munson Medical Center for treatment and has since returned to the jail where she was promptly placed on suicide watch.
